The Presentation

Well the presentation went well and the judges acknowledged our level of "professionalism" as well as incouraging us to go ahead with the idea. Just thought I'd upload some images of our set-up on the day, an example of how our potential office and merchandise or rather give-aways would look like.

Go Team 7!

Think we're onto a winner with this idea, that went much better than the first interdisciplinary project. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all they've done for the project, it looked really good today. Glad it's over though, so many other things on. Art school is not the skive everyone thinks it is. We are thoroughly mis-represented, anyone reading this take note.

Proper typeface for logo

Here's our logo. Sorry about the previous image, unfortunately I gave soldersister the WRONG file! (oopsy) The address book is nearly ready to be sent to print, so we're getting there! Maybe we should get this idea patented and copywritten cos its a pretty good idea! Or am I just getting carried away?!

Sketch Logo

We'll we now have an identity, our logo has been decided on. The project now seems far more relevant as the remainder of our third year is down to a number of weeks and fourth year is looming. It's quite exciting really but the past couple of years here have just flown by. I think the next one will go faster still and I'm personally feeling unprepared for the real world as a designer. If this consultancy were in a real life situation I think it would be quite reassuring to know that other designers were available to work with. It would also help to further my experiences as a designer because university is really just the first step of a long journey and there are many different paths that working across disciplines can lead.

The Plan

The main idea behind Sketch is that we are a design consultancy available to recent graduates and design companies in order to help bring them together should anyone need staff or expertise in a different specialism. I think the title of the blog pretty much says this but I thought it best to reinforce this point.

The ideas the group decided on for the presentation:

An address book/directory of designers and contact details.
A sketchbook style catalogue of designers' work.
A price book.
An office phone.
Posters, business cards and other promotional give-aways.

Things, suggestions and ideas to consider

What am I thinking...
Why do designers use a sketch book?
What are the different types of use for a sketchbook?
What other types of stakeholders use a sketch book, outwith the art and design field?
Who would sponsor our company?... universities, art schools, colleges?
What additional service would our company provide?
The big yellow phone: one to one chats with anyone who calls the number, whether that be a design student or an old lady, we would chat to them. (similar ethics to Innocent)
Create a company mission statment which portrays our values and intentions.
Create brand image and logo.
Idea for logo: doodle representing each discipline.
Form of final product:
black and white, incorporating features of an address book, room for contact details and notes, blank pages, bound...
'Sketch' will remind you of who your fellow students are and what they are capable of, and introduce you to new students work you are unfamiliar with. As well as functioning as a portfolio and CV.
Design of front cover?graphic?
Book opens from left hand side rather than familair right hand side
Target audience: graduates, typical sketchbook users, as well as design consultancies or uninformed person in need of help from a designer.

How are we going to present on the day?
Incorporate 'make believe' reviews from newspapers about our design.
How are we going to explain what 'sketch' is all about?
Use blog regularly and hand in as evidence of thinking behind our idea.
How can we extend the brand: pencils? a bit cliche, post its?
Who are we as a company?
Why would people use our service and buy our product?
What do we offer?
How much would the book cost?
Where would people buy it?

"Life is always a sketch. No sketch is quite the right word, because a sketch is an outline of something, the groundwork for a picture, whereas the sketch that is life is a sketch of nothing, an outline without a picture..." Milan Kunedra
Hello new blog :) I do apologise to the other team members for my absence this morning. I was attending the Summit for Entrepeneurs at the Ciard Hall, 9 till 5. i think we should meet up maybe tomorrow at some point...just to get everything finalised and then we can do it over the weekend....

Welcome

Hello and welcome to our blog. We are a collective of design students at Duncan of Jordanstone art college, our chosen specialisms are Graphics, Jewellery, Textiles and Innovative Product Design. We are currently working together to produce a directory of our work including examples of our stuff and contact details for graduates. Our aim is to help bring graduates from different specialisms together after art school to help broaden their experience and opportunities after art school. If you have any thoughts of being an art school graduate and your career thereafter, please feel free to comment. We'd appreciate the feedback.
